Clichés de campagne

  • Online between March 18 and May 15, 2012
  • Featuring Myop Agency photographers: Guillaume Binet, Lionel Charrier, and Ulrich Lebeuf
  • A Myop, Upian, and France Inter production

A single goal: provide an inside look at 30 highlights that marked the 2012 presidentiel election campaign, including meetings, gatherings, TV events, and speeches.

For each competing candidate, the Myop photographers covered many of these events, at different times during the campaign.

From these images, we created a continuous narrative stream by turning into newspaper editors and selecting user-created content (images, tweets, posts) to appear alongside the images.

We are left with multiple perspectives and voices that meet each other, follow each other, and add up to this portrait of a moment, snapshots of the little stories that make up History.  It’s isn’t necessarily a matter of forcing users to reflect on the relationship between the items selected from the stream and the images. Their juxtaposition is intended to be experienced rather to create meaning.

We attempted to convey, as much as possible and on many levels, the atmosphere that presides over this type of event:

  • what happens behind the scenes, the logistics, the candidate’s arrival, all the handshakes;
  • what happens in the audience: they comment, push forward for a closer look, react, participate;
  • what happens with partisans and opponents: they follow the event from afar, but send each other sound bites, comments, videos, share photos;
  • and obviously what happens under the spotlight.

The framework is a tried and tested API (storify.com) on which we layered additional developments to turn it into a timeline with class hierarchy and enhance it with sound.

We explain, comment, fact check, hunt for the right image, decipher, tell stories.

And then:

  • a design that puts the emphasis on the photographs themselves, where the single moment defines the rhythm of the stream;
  • unidirectional and intuitive navigation: I scroll forwards and backwards within the content, over a chronological timeline, as if I were witnessing the event, by scrolling with my mouse or navigating with my arrow keys.

Clichés de Campagne #the movie

At « Les Nuits Photographiques » festival, with the « Ecole Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie » on july saturday 7 2012 in Arles.

An experience which, in the end, gave rise to a new format, since eight different programs were then produced according to the same principle.
